Racism, sexism, gender equality, economic disparity and other important issues affecting our country have been talked to death. As liberals, we need to say, “That’s enough!”
There’s only so much talking and “building bridges to understanding” that’s going to happen in today’s America. I can’t help but feel like, if you don’t “get it” at this point, it’s willful and you’re never going to “get it”. And if I keep trying to help you “get it”, I’m a fool and you’re wasting my time.
Really, this shit is not hard. It’s just not.
The truth is, we have real and serious work to do. And frankly, some things are not worth endless discussion with people who are stuck in the 18th century. If we'd waited for consensus and understanding around, say, segregation, or on say, marriage equality, we'd still be waiting.
The other truth is, we don't need their understanding. We don't need their “tolerance”. We don't even need them to like or agree with what we're saying. All we need to do is to commit to neutralizing their power; to focus our energy on eliminating their influence socially and politically, and in as many places as possible — from the local school board to the White House. It’s that is entirely within our reach.
Then, they can either adapt or die.
